They stayed at the Waffle House into the early hours of the morning and talked about everything from his childhood experiences growing up around the military to the summer he spent in Paris. She hadn't realized how much she missed having adult conversation and she enjoyed speaking with him. She even told him about how scared she was to give birth, something that only Jackson knew. He explained that destiny can sometimes be scary, and used his becoming a minister as an example. He insisted that he was afraid the very first time he spoke to a crowd, which she found hard to believe. She figured he was a master at it. She liked the way his mind worked, though. He was smart. Very intellectual, and his viewpoints were intriguing. She could talk to him for an entire day if he allowed.
They continued their conversation as he drove her home. When they got there he parked his truck and they talked for another hour. She knew they'd been together for too long, but she didn't want to say goodbye to him just yet. She was just starting to get to know him, and he was the only friend she'd made the entire time she'd been in Mississippi.
"Hey, ummmm..." She nervously pointed to the house. "Do you wanna come inside?"
His eyes widened in surprise and she realized she probably sounded like she wanted him in her bedroom.
"Oh, no," she quickly stopped him. "Not to... you know, do that. Just to talk. If you're not sleepy."
He still seemed taken aback by her offer.
"Or not," she said, feeling stupid. "It's late, and... you probably have... God things to do, or something. I just thought we were having a nice conversation, and I haven't really talked to anyone in a long time. Or... met anyone like you before, and..."
She became flustered and covered her face with embarrassment.
"Yeah, we can do that."
She breathed an uneasy sigh of relief. "Are you sure? You're not just feeling sorry for me, are you?"
"No, I like talking to you. My hesitation was the situation, not you," he tried to clarify. "It's late. I'm a single man, you're a woman. I'm sure you have neighbors...."
"I don't care what they think," she told him.
He smiled at her spunk. "Well, if you don't care, then I don't care."
They got out of his truck and walked through the darkness to the front door. Before they went inside Amanda apologized for not having a working porch light. But that was the base's fault, not hers, so she didn't feel any guilt as they went inside the house. They were supposed to replace it a long time ago, and since they were kicking her out, she refused to spend the two dollars and thirty cents it would cost at the PX to get another one.
"You can have a seat on the sofa," she told him, and locked the door behind them as she turned on the living room light.
He walked into the living room and looked around.
